What is Cold Forming?

It is a process that deforms or re-shapes metal within limits by the application of a given suitable force without thereby disturbing or damaging the internal structure of the material being deformed.

Metal, simplistically, is like wood in that it has a grain. However, the grain structure of metal is more plastic (wood is more elastic). Given that the above definition is enforced, as a metal is deformed so the grain of the metal will tend to follow the contours of the shape it produces. The shape is determined by the pocket or die that the metal is being forced into.

Consider the benefits of the cold-forming process:-

Cold-forged component
By forging the component, the grain structure deforms to the shape of the component resulting in no shear planes. This means a stronger component. Notice that there is no waste material produced by cold-forging.

....against the same machined/turned component from bar:-

MATERIAL BEING WASTED
Notice the weak shear planes (marked in red) created along the line of the grain structure. This makes the component inherently weak.
